Top Ten Signs that Twitter is Becoming Main Stream

Yesterday was Social Media Day and in the lull that marks the beginning of the July 4th Holiday weekend, I took a look back on some of the social media news of the past week. Articles about the social media ‘revolution’ were everywhere and to no surprise, Twitter figured prominently. What was surprising was how un-revolutionary many of the articles were. As a matter of fact, they appeared down right – ahem – mainstream.

Taking my cue from David Letterman, I compiled the following from this week’s articles:

Top Ten Signs that Twitter is Becoming Main Stream

#10.  Major League Baseball celebrated Social Media Day with specially-designated All-Star Game-themed hashtag for fans to use in hashtag battles on Twitter.

# 9.  Google+ launched with eye on making Twitter the next Myspace.

# 8.  President Obama to do Twitter town hall chat on economy on July 6th.

# 7.  Halfway through 2011, users on Twitter are now sending 200 million Tweets per day vs 65 million a day last year.

# 6.  Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a video appearance to express thanks for winning an award for his use of new media. saying “You can always follow me on ‘Tweeter’ at, uh, GovernorPerry,”  That’s right–“Tweeter.”

# 5.  White House press pool losing scoops to Twitter

# 4.  The NBA lockout means that coaches can’t have any contact with their players and that includes twitter! Coaches will face a $1m fine for retweeting one of their players during the lockout.

# 3.  JFK Turtles Explain Runway Crawl On Twitter saying: “We go straight to the runway because it takes 5 hours to get out of our shells for the TSA.”!/JFKTurtles

# 2.  In an effort to to alert motorists to the traffic nightmare that might arrive when Interstate 405 is closed next month, the LAPD has asked Lady Gaga (nearly 11.3 million followers), Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore (7 million and 3.7 million respectively) and Kim Kardashian (8 million followers) to urge their followers to avoid a 10-mile stretch of the roadway the weekend of July 15th.

And the #1 Sign that Twitter is Becoming Main Stream:

Pope’s first tweet, done on an iPad and captured on video, marks Vatican social media revolution.

To paraphrase The Beatles:
You say you want a revolution … You tell me that it’s evolution
Well, you know, we all want to change the world

The world has changed and the social media revolution has evolved. It’s not controversial anymore – it’s a lifestyle.

I’d love to hear your comments!

Welcome To The Social Media Revolution!

Still wondering about the importance of Social Media on society? Well, think about this:
Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.
Kindergartens are learning on iPads, not chalkboards.
Generation Y and Z consider e-mail yesterdays news.
YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world.

Those are just a few of the facts included in the latest installment of “Social Media Revolution.”

The video is produced by Socialnomics author Erik Qualman, who has created several similar videos, and keeps updating them with new data.

The latest video in the series is updated with data up to June 2011 and contains several interesting highlights:

95% of companies using social media for recruitment use LinkedIn.
Groupon will reach $1 billion in sales faster than any company in history.
93% of marketers use social media for business.
Social gamers will buy $6 billion in virtual goods by 2013.

The ROI of Social Media is: your business will still exist in 5 years!

The facts are there and I could not think of a more eloquent way to share them than sharing this video. What do you think? Check it out below and tell us in the comments.
